If your refrigerator or freezer stops working, don’t panic — follow these steps to protect your food and help us get things back up and running as quickly as possible.

1️⃣ Keep the Doors Closed

Each time you open the fridge or freezer, cold air escapes and food warms up faster.
Try not to open the doors unless absolutely necessary.

2️⃣ Use a Cooler for Perishable Items

Transfer milk, meat, dairy, and other easily spoiled foods into a cooler packed with ice.
If you don’t have a cooler, pick up a styrofoam or disposable cooler from a grocery store, Walmart, or Dollar Tree.
It’s always a good idea to keep one or two coolers on hand for unexpected situations like this or power outages.

3️⃣ Make or Buy Ice

Use ice trays or purchase bagged ice from your local gas station or grocery store.
You can also ask a friend or neighbor if they can share some to help get you started.

4️⃣ Check Power & Breakers

Before submitting a maintenance request:

Confirm the fridge is plugged in securely.
Check your breaker panel to make sure it hasn’t tripped.
If the fridge light doesn’t turn on, reset the breaker and try again.
Include these details in your work order so our team can assess faster.

5️⃣ Submit a Maintenance Request Immediately

Log in to your Resident Portal and submit a Work Order under “Appliance – Refrigerator.”
Please include:
Whether it’s not cooling, not freezing, or not turning on.
When you first noticed the issue.
Any sounds, lights, or leaks you’ve noticed.

The more detail you provide, the faster we can resolve the problem.

6️⃣ We Understand This Is Urgent

We know how inconvenient a broken fridge or freezer can be, and our team always treats these as priority repairs.

However, sometimes parts, replacements, or delivery times from the manufacturer can take several days.

To prepare or prevent major food loss, we recommend:

Having a cooler or styrofoam box available at home.
Keeping ice packs or frozen water bottles ready in your freezer.
Owning a mini fridge or borrowing one from a friend or family member if possible.

7️⃣ Insurance & Temporary Options

Contact your renters insurance provider — most policies will reimburse for food loss caused by a covered fridge or freezer failure, and some may even cover temporary refrigeration options.
Ask a neighbor or friend if they can temporarily store your food items in their fridge or freezer until yours is repaired or replaced.

8️⃣ If It’s a Power Outage

If the issue is due to a power outage:

Report the outage to your local utility provider (SRP, APS, or EPCOR).
Keep the doors closed to retain cold air.
Once power is restored, your fridge should begin cooling again automatically.

9️⃣ Prevent Future Loss

Keep a few shelf-stable essentials (peanut butter, canned soup, tuna, or protein bars).
Avoid overloading your fridge — good airflow helps it run more efficiently.
Keep a small supply of ice or reusable freezer packs handy.
